Akamai has launched Connected Cloud, combining its cloud computing, delivery and security services under a broader platform name.
The announcement includes plans for new core compute sites in the United States and Europe, alongside a wider distributed-compute rollout. Those plans expand on the compute business acquired with Linode.
For an application team
- Core compute and CDN edge delivery remain different services.
- New-site announcements need to be checked against actual product availability.
- Region choice should follow the application’s users and data dependencies.
The broader platform makes Akamai relevant to both running and delivering applications. It does not mean every CDN point of presence is a location where a customer can launch the same VM or managed database.
