Cloudflare has made R2 generally available after its open beta. The service provides object storage through an S3-compatible API and integrates with Workers.
Its pricing approach removes the outbound-transfer charge associated with downloading stored objects. Storage and operations remain separate billable components.
Where the difference matters
Public files can create much more delivery traffic than stored capacity. Removing that egress component can change the economics of an image library or download service.
The whole setup still needs a budget: requests, storage and other Cloudflare products can contribute charges. S3 compatibility also has a supported-operation boundary, so an existing client should be tested rather than assumed to behave exactly as it does against Amazon S3.
