DigitalOcean has launched App Platform, a PaaS offering for building, deploying and scaling applications and static sites from a GitHub repository.
The platform builds on DigitalOcean’s infrastructure and Kubernetes, while hiding much of that operational work from the application team.
A different job from a Droplet
- App Platform manages the deployment environment.
- Droplets provide a VM for teams that want to manage the server themselves.
- Connected databases, storage and traffic still belong in the project budget.
The launch adds a useful choice within one provider: spend time operating infrastructure, or use a managed application platform. Runtime support and deployment settings matter more than treating both products as interchangeable hosting plans.
