DigitalOcean has launched Spaces for storing unstructured data such as application files, images and backups.
The service gives developers persistent object storage alongside DigitalOcean’s compute products. Its S3-compatible interface offers a familiar starting point for existing client tools.
Where it fits
- Keep user uploads outside the application’s local disk.
- Store assets independently of the server that generates them.
- Expand capacity without resizing the application VM.
Compatibility still needs to be checked against the operations an application actually uses. Location, delivery traffic and the chosen access pattern affect the overall setup. Spaces is covered in the DigitalOcean profile; it is not yet a priced row in CloudOverview’s six-product storage calculator.
