IBM announces general availability for Code Engine

Code Engine adds a managed, serverless application option within IBM Cloud.

IBM Cloud →

IBM says Cloud Code Engine is generally available. The fully managed serverless service is designed to let developers deploy and scale code without assembling the underlying environment themselves.

The announcement positions Code Engine as a way to reduce setup work and charge for the resources used while code runs.

A different operational split

A managed execution service can reduce server administration, but the application still needs configuration, permissions and connected data services. Those remain part of the team’s work and its budget.

The addition is useful for developers evaluating IBM Cloud beyond conventional virtual machines. Compare the runtime requirements and scaling behavior of the application before choosing a serverless deployment instead of an always-running instance.
