MongoDB has introduced Atlas, a managed cloud service for its document database. The launch starts on AWS, while Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud are listed as planned additions.
Atlas handles infrastructure and database-management tasks that teams would otherwise need to assemble around a self-hosted MongoDB deployment.
What the managed route changes
Developers gain a hosted database setup, but remain responsible for application queries, indexes, access control and data design. Those choices affect resource requirements and performance.
The initial cloud footprint should not be confused with future availability across all named platforms. Teams need to select an actual supported region and configuration, then compare capacity, backups and traffic as part of the complete application budget.
