AWS has introduced S3 Express One Zone, a storage class aimed at workloads that repeatedly access data close to their compute.
It uses directory buckets and stores replicated objects within a single availability zone. That placement is a central difference from S3 Standard, which spreads data across multiple availability zones.
Before choosing it
- Place the compute and directory bucket deliberately.
- Check the APIs and client operations supported by directory buckets.
- Price Express separately from an S3 Standard workload.
The new class is relevant to data-intensive processing where access latency matters. It is not a drop-in price reduction for a public download library, and its single-zone design needs to fit the application’s recovery plan. CloudOverview’s storage calculator continues to model S3 Standard.
